Building the boats
The Operation Lelievlet Initiative will replicate the build system and methodology pioneered by Dutch Sea scouts.
The Lelievlet design has proved itself over many decades as an all round boat suitable for use by Scouts.
Operation Lelievlet will provide trainees with the opportunity to learn valuable work skills , project management , welding and boat building expertise.
Trainees will firstly learn how to do basic welds and will soon be involved in building the lelievlet in its various stages.
All Lelievlets built will be part of the Scouting Ireland Fleet and will be placed in water activity centres and with those Scout Groups that operate a water based programme in their Group.
Other skills will also be learnt by the trainees including mast and deck making as well as sail making. Trainees will also learn how to sail these boats.
Operation Lelievlet is not only a boat building project but rather a youth development initiaitive. Boat building will be at its core but also the trainees will develop valuable life skills in communication and teamwork and work knowledge that they can bring forward into valuable career choices in the future.
